Addiction Treatment Options
12-Step, Talk Therapy, or Medication?
The most common treatment options are:
Medication Assisted Treatment
Psychotherapy (Individual or Group)
Self-help programs such as 12-Step Programs
Addiction treatment options vary based on the patients' preferences and the severity of the addiction. Options range from Intensive Inpatient or Residential Treatment to participation in self-help groups such AA or NA. Quitting "cold turkey" is rarely advised. Abruptly quitting some substances such as alcohol or benzodiazepines after prolonged use can be life threatening and thus require medical detox. The patients most likely to reach full-recovery are the ones who combine multiple methods. For example, receiving suboxone to quell cravings while working with a therapist to learn new coping skills.
